Prairie Crossing Charter School

Location: Grayslake, IL

Prairie Crossing Charter SchoolPrairie Crossing is the critically-acclaimed ‘Conservation Community’ designed to combine responsible development, the preservation of open land and easy commuting by rail.

It is now considered a national example of how to design our communities to support a better way of life. In addition to housing, an organic farm and open space and trails, the development also includes a charter school. The school fosters life-long learning and environmental stewardship for students, parents and teachers. Serving approximately 360, K-8 students, the school includes a 15,400 sq. ft. school, an 11,000 sq. ft. classroom building and a 9,200 sq. ft. gymnasium building.

The project consumes at least 50% less energy than a conventional building through the use of geothermal heat pumps and radiant floors fed from geothermal water to water heat pumps. In addition to daylighting, the system incorporates the use of demand control ventilation in conjunction with heat recovery. These sustainable design features helped the project receive an Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation Grant.
