Environmental Engineering/Environmental Study

Union Center Plaza ESA, Washington, DC

CCJM was contracted to perform a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment of the Union Center Plaza in Washington, DC. The property was surrounded by office buildings in downtown near Union Station. CCJM used the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) 1527-99 Environmental Site Assessments protocol. The assessment included a site walkover of the subject property and surrounding properties to identify any environmental concerns. The assessment also included a review of Sanborn Fire Insurance Rate Maps, local historical records, environmental regulatory databases, and contacting agencies using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Based on the investigation, no environmental concerns were identified on the property.

When excavation activities began on the site, a previously unknown underground storage tank (UST) was identified on the property. The owner had the tank removed and properly disposed of off site. CCJM was again called upon to provide a UST closure report to DC regulatory authorities. The closure report was completed in less than a week. This timely response allowed for a minimal slowing of work, and allowed the project to resume and be on schedule.
