Wastewater Facilities Design and Construction Management
Greater Cairo Wastewater Projects
The old, inadequate sewerage system of Cairo, Egypt, the larg-est City in Africa received new systems built and old systems rehabilitated under a massive undertaking called ''The Greater Cairo Wastewater Project" at a total cost of over two billion dollars. Just over two decades ago, millions of people in Cairo faced streets flooded with sewage. Millions of gallons of untreated sewage flowed into the Nile River
Over a span of eighteen (18) years, CCJM was repeatedly selected by the Cairo Wastewater Organiza tion (CWO) under three (3) major contracts and several amendments thereto. Beginning in 1987 through July 1996, CCJM provided Construction Management Con sulting (CMC) and Resident Engineering Services as a sub-consultant with 'AMBRIC', (a consortium of Ameri can and British consulting firms) to extend sewerage facilities to developed unsewered areas. The Embaba sewer project, managed by CCJM, became a 'showcase project' for CWO and the U.S. Agency for International Development dignitaries.
From September 1996 through 2005, under the same program, CCJM was independently selected as the prime consultant to provide planning, engineering design, contract docu ment preparation, preconstruction services and construction management services, under two Host Country contracts, to extend sewerage facilities to developed, but unsewered areas and to replace old, overloaded sewerage facilities in the Greater Cairo area.
Under CCJM CMC services since 1987, 600 kilometers of major collectors and branch sewers (150mm to 2750mm), seven (7) pumping stations, and the rehabilitation of a wastewater treatment plant have been completed at a construction cost of $143 million. Since 1996, new and add-on wastewater facilities were planned and de signed by CCJM.
Millions of residents in greater Cairo, some previously living in unsewered areas, now have wastewater services, a safer environment, and healthier living conditions.
