Northwestern University
Evanston, IL
Northwestern University is a private university located along the shores of Lake Michigan with an enrollment of 15,000 students. CCJM provided engineering design services for the following projects:
Kresge Underground Book Storage Facility
The “Kresge” underground storage building, constructed in 1955, comprises approximately 48,600 sq. ft. The University decided to renovate the existing building to a book storage facility without public access and only minimal staff occupancy. The new work converts 50% or approximately 24,000 sq. ft. of the existing storage into a new state-of-the-art archival quality book storage facility with associated staff work areas and amenities.
Main Library Plaza Café
Northwestern added a new dining area to the Main Library. The project involved conversion of an existing large lobby entrance space into two cyber café areas with wireless data exchange capabilities. Existing HVAC, voice, data and communication systems and power systems were upgraded to achieve the project goals. Wireless equipment was aesthetically located to allow students to connect to the university’s main computer network via wireless networking. The upgraded HVAC and electrical systems were designed to enhance ventilation and odor control.
