Chicago Christian Industrial League
Chicago, IL

The Chicago Christian Industrial League, established in 1909 on the Near West side of Chicago, is a non-sectarian, non-profit organization serving poor and homeless men, women, and families.  For more than 3 years, the League evaluated potential sites throughout the city, considering both new and renovated properties as their present 90 year old building was falling down around them. Finally a site at Roosevelt Road and California Avenue was selected in the North Lawndale community.   The League decided to incorporate sustainable elements into its new building.

The new 125,000 sq. ft. complex includes five separate, but connected buildings with shared areas, building support area, common floor areas and vehicle maintenance area.  The buildings include 340-bed residential, state-of-the-art 50,000 sq. ft. corporate office and technical training center, adult and child development center and 220-seat cafeteria.  Food service will be provided 3 times a day.  A morning soup kitchen and food pantry is also provided.

CCJM’s design includes sustainable features such as heat recovery, site stormwater management, variable volume water and air side systems, daylight harvesting, and high efficiency equipment.  The project also qualified for an Illinois Clean Energy Grant.
