CCJM has been providing bridge and highway design services since 1979. In that time we have designed over 80 highway structures for PennDOT and more than 10 other agencies across the Northeastern United States and in four other countries outside of North America.
Bridge Design
Our staff has been designing structures ranging from simple pre-fabricated culverts to multi-span bridges hundreds of feet long from New York to Nevada to Florida for over 25 years. Our experience includes design of many single and multiple cell culverts and numerous single and multiple span bridges; simple and continuous, of steel, concrete and timber; straight and curved; on piles and spread footings over roadways, waterways, railroads and other features. We have designed more than 35 bridges in the past few years for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation alone. In addition, CCJM is well versed in the design of bridges over rail having recently completed the five-span Market Street Bridge (SR 452) over Amtrak, SEPTA, and NS; the one-span Eby Chiques Rd Bridge over Amtrak and NS and the complex single span curved steel multi-girder SR 3070 bridge over Amtrak (pictured here) among others. CCJM is particularly adept at integrating environmental and bridge challenges to come up with strategies that can move projects quickly and at low cost.
Bridge Inspection
CCJM’s breadth of bridge inspection experience since 1990 includes exacting hands-on inspections, careful analyses and prudent recommendations for action for thousands of structures—more than 8,000 at last count. Our inspectors are well-versed in in-depth inspections, use of rigging and non-destructive testing. They understand the importance of fracture criticality, have had special training in and pay special attention to areas that are fatigue sensitive. Our past experience with statewide inspection programs has helped us establish highly efficient travel and fieldwork protocols that minimize long distance travel costs and ensure that the billable person-hours are utilized in the provision of required services. CCJM was selected as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Bridge Inspection Quality Assurance Consultant for consecutive contracts for eight years and as the Commonwealth’s Statewide Local Bridge Inspection consultant for an ongoing period covering 12 consecutive years.
Roadway Design
CCJM has over 30 years of experience in highway design and maintenance and protection of traffic including design of nearly two miles of roadway for the ongoing Keystone Corridor project, widening of Interstate 83 north of Harrisburg, PA, nine miles of auxiliary lanes for SR 219 and nearly one half mile of relocated roadway on the Reedy Road Relocation project. In particular, the design of the new Exit 17 interchange on Interstate 81 (pictured here) demonstrated our capacity to negotiate a complex web of community, agricultural, environmental and cultural constraints. We employ a combination of careful resource documentation; consideration of right-sizing, context sensitive design, smart transportation solutions and design exceptions; innovative design and use of every available option to minimize the “footprint” of the project. Through footprint minimization we have been able to expedite the environmental clearance process and avoid areas of sensitive cultural resources. CCJM is committed to minimizing pre-construction costs and enabling the Contractor to build a cost-effective constructible project that requires minimal maintenance.
Our Performance Ratings on bridge inspections and structural engineering services have always been excellent. The best evidence of our past exemplary performance is repeat business from our clients.
